How to Find and Change BPM in Logic Pro
Logic Pro displays the project tempo in the LCD area at the top of the main window. Tempo can be set numerically, tapped in real time, automatically detected from audio with Smart Tempo, or automated. Logic Pro defaults to 120 BPM.
How to change the tempo in Logic Pro
- Locate the LCD display at the top centre of the Logic Pro window — the tempo is displayed in BPM.
- Click and drag the BPM value up or down, or double-click to type.
- Press Enter or Tab to confirm. The new tempo applies to the entire project unless tempo automation is in use.
- Hold Shift while dragging for fine-grained adjustment (0.01 BPM increments).
How to use tap tempo in Logic Pro
Logic Pro has a built-in Tap Tempo plugin. Insert it on a software instrument or audio track, or use Logic's Key Command Editor to assign a key to "Tap Tempo." Tap four times on the beat to set the tempo. You can also tap with a MIDI controller assigned to the Tap Tempo command.
If you don't want to set up tap tempo inside Logic Pro, use our browser-based tap tempo tool — tap the BPM, then enter the value into your DAW.
How to detect BPM of audio in Logic Pro
Feature: Smart Tempo
Drop an audio file onto a track. Logic's Smart Tempo auto-analyses the BPM. Open the Smart Tempo Editor (Edit > Tempo > Show Smart Tempo Editor) to view detected beats and tempo curve. Adjust beat markers if Logic mis-detects.
How to automate tempo changes in Logic Pro
- Open the Tempo Track: View > Show Global Tracks (or press G), then enable the Tempo track.
- Click on the Tempo track at any position to add a tempo node.
- Drag nodes vertically to change BPM, horizontally to change position.
- Right-click a node to set an exact tempo value or to apply a tempo curve.

Tips
- Logic Pro defaults to 120 BPM but the Smart Tempo can match the project to imported audio automatically.
- Use "Adapt to Project Tempo" when importing audio to keep your project tempo and warp the audio to fit.
- Use "Keep Audio Tempo" when importing audio and you want the project to follow the audio's native tempo.
- Tempo Operations menu (Edit > Tempo) includes useful commands for thinning, doubling, halving, and curving tempo data.
