How to Find and Change BPM in GarageBand

GarageBand shows project tempo in the LCD area at the top of the window (Mac) or in the controls bar (iOS). Tempo can be set numerically or via tap tempo on macOS. GarageBand defaults to 120 BPM.

How to change the tempo in GarageBand

  1. On Mac: locate the LCD display at the top of the GarageBand window.
  2. Click and drag the BPM value up or down, or double-click to type a value.
  3. On iOS: tap the controls bar at the top, then tap "Settings" (gear icon) > "Tempo." Drag the slider or type a value.
  4. Press Done / Enter to apply. The tempo applies to the entire project.

How to use tap tempo in GarageBand

On Mac: click the metronome icon in the LCD, then choose "Tap Tempo." Tap on the beat to set the tempo. On iOS: tap the tempo number in Settings, then tap the beat icon to enable tap-to-set.

If you don't want to set up tap tempo inside GarageBand, use our browser-based tap tempo tool — tap the BPM, then enter the value into your DAW.

Tips

  • GarageBand defaults to 120 BPM on both Mac and iOS.
  • On Mac, enable the Tempo Track (Track > Show Tempo Track) for tempo automation.
  • GarageBand on iOS does not support automatic BPM detection — use our tap tempo tool or upgrade to Logic Pro for Smart Tempo.
  • When importing audio, GarageBand can sync the audio to project tempo via Flex Time on Mac.
