How to use this metronome

  1. Set your tempo with the slider, the +/− buttons, or by tapping the Tap tempo button in time
  2. Choose a time signature: the first beat of every bar is accented with a higher click
  3. Add subdivisions (eighths, triplets, sixteenths) to practice precise rhythmic placement
  4. Press Play or hit the space bar; arrow keys nudge the tempo by 1 BPM

Practicing with a metronome

Start slower than you think you need. A common approach is dropping to 60-70% of the target tempo and only speeding up once you can play a passage cleanly three times in a row. Increase in small steps of 2-5 BPM rather than big jumps.

Practicing with subdivisions turned on tightens your internal clock: set the metronome to eighth notes or sixteenth notes and lock every note to the grid. To build independence, try the opposite: set the click to only beat 1 of each bar and keep time yourself between clicks.

Not sure what tempo a song is? Use our tap tempo tool to find any song's BPM, then practice along at the same tempo. Ready for a challenge? Try the polyrhythm visualizer to hear two rhythms at once.
